Mike Putt and Sons are the only remaining sail makers left in London, and are the creators of the Guinness World Records Word’s Largest Bra for Breast Cancer Campaign’s ‘Wear it Pink Day’ on the 28th October 2011. Mike began his career as a sailmaker apprentice in the royal docks during the 1940’s, and has continued working in the manufacturing industry ever since.
The early nineties saw Mike and his two sons make the ‘main lower topsail’ for the Cutty Sark. The purpose of this was to advertise the need for funds for the ships restoration project. Impressively the ship can be seen in the UK’s famous London Marathon each year.
Their work has not gone unnoticed. Tommy Walsh has even recommended Mike’s services to Charlie Dimmock, with the purpose of creating a set of screens for an episode of Groundforce. The programme aired in the spring of 2005 and repeats are frequently shown on UKTV Style Garden.
Most recently Mike’s son produced the World’s Largest Bra! It took 4 weeks to make and weighs an impressive 75kg, not including the fixings and clips that should take the bra up to 90kg!
The bra has a bust measurement of 29.6 metres – just shy of the width of two tennis courts!
And that’s bigger than the longest ever recorded Blue Whale!
